Discussion

Situation

The US Department of Defence requested a packaged wastewater treatment plant. At various locations, 15 cubic metres of municipal wastewater are produced daily, which the ministry would like to treat for direct discharge. The responsible persons wanted a reliable and biological wastewater treatment in a sea container. The Department of Defence was explicitly looking for an experienced and reliable company in the field of wastewater treatment. With PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH, they found the ideal partner for this.

Problem

The first challenge in this project was to achieve the required discharge values. The mobile wastewater treatment plant was to reduce the COD from 800 mg/l to 90 mg/l and the BOD from 400 mg/l to 20 mg/l. In addition, there is nitrogen and phosphorus in the wastewater, which must not flow into the environment without treatment. Another challenge was the bureaucratic handling of the project. The Ministry of Defence insisted on complete documentation with uncomplicated processing at the same time. In addition, a power supply with a frequency of 50 Hz is mandatory in Germany. However, the Department of Defence required a 60 Hz power supply.

Solution

For this project, PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH offered the Department of Defence a complete solution installed in a 20-foot HC ISO sea container. At the beginning, the wastewater flows into a collection tank where the first coarse solids can settle. These must not get into the biological reactor, as they could otherwise disturb the biology. Since the wastewater flows very irregularly into the collection tank, it then enters a buffer tank that balances out the inflow peaks. The wastewater then flows evenly into the ClearFox® FBBR, which treats it biologically.

The microorganisms separate the dissolved substances from the clear water. This produces an activated sludge, which partially returns the packaged wastewater treatment plant to the buffer tank for further wastewater treatment. To separate the clear water completely from the sludge, a connected lamella clarifier settles it by gravity. Part of the activated sludge remains in the fixed bed reactor to ensure further biological wastewater treatment. The collected sludge has to be disposed of at regular intervals by the US Department of Defence base.

For this project, PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH took over the complete planning, the production of the wastewater treatment plant, the delivery as well as the installation and instruction of the staff on site. As the company has already realised numerous projects in countries all over the world, the handling of the project went smoothly. PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH was thus able to fulfil all the customer’s wishes.

FAQ

Yes, the solution can be customized. PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH develops wastewater treatment systems that can be tailored to the specific requirements and loads of each project. Contact us with the details of your project and we will create a customized solution.

Yes, the power supply of the mobile plant can be flexibly adapted to local conditions. For this project we have provided a 60 Hz supply. Our engineers can develop a solution for your specific requirements.

Yes, the container solution is specifically designed for use in remote or temporary locations. It only requires a power supply and is ready to use once installed.

Our systems use biological processes to efficiently reduce nitrogen and phosphorus. The ClearFox® FBBR (fixed bed biological reactor) is specifically designed to remove these pollutants and comply with discharge limits.

Maintenance is designed to be user-friendly. After comprehensive training by our team, your employees can carry out the regular checks. We offer maintenance contracts on request.
