The problem — why hotel effluent is demanding

Hotels use far more water per guest than a home — around 250 litres and 75 g of BOD₅ per guest per day — and the load is anything but steady. Left unmanaged, that creates three concrete business risks:

• Sharp seasonal and event peaks. Conferences, weddings and peak season can double or triple loads; an incorrectly sized system tips into non-compliance exactly when the hotel is busiest.
• High-strength, FOG-heavy streams. Kitchen fats, oils and grease, laundry detergents and pool backwash push COD, BOD and suspended solids well above domestic levels and can cause failures if untreated.
• The guest experience is non-negotiable. Odour, noise or visual intrusion from a treatment plant directly harms the hotel’s reputation — treatment has to be invisible.

Add remote and rural sites with no sewer, and outdated septic systems that can’t cope with high-strength hotel wastewater, and the case for a properly engineered system is clear. That’s exactly what we build.

The solution — treatment systems built around your discharge route

The right solution depends on your occupancy pattern and where the treated water is going. We build in coordinated stages:

Discharge to sewer (indirect)

Where a sewer connection exists, grease and FOG removal plus biological pre-treatment cut the load to meet local discharge limits and protect the downstream network.

Direct discharge (to the environment)

For rural and resort sites, FBBR (Fixed Bed Biofilm Reactor) biological treatment after screening and FOG removal reliably meets direct-discharge limits, even through peak-season swings. Lower effluent values can be achieved with our range of tertiary treatment options such as nutrient removal, filtration and disinfection.

Water reuse for irrigation

Landscape irrigation typically accounts for around 10% of hotel water use. Advanced treatment with membrane filtration and disinfection produces irrigation-quality water from even high-strength hotel streams — cutting freshwater cost and supporting sustainability credentials.

• Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) — acts as an equalisation basin, absorbing peak flows from conferences and events; well suited to variable hotel loading.
