Discussion
Situation
An engineering office from Trinidad and Tobago planned a housing complex for a total of 300 people. They required a below-ground wastewater treatment plant suitable for discharge direct to surface water. The requirements were to reduce COD from 800 mg/l to 250 mg/l and BOD5 from 400 mg/l to 20 mg/l. Together with UV disinfection, this corresponds to effluent class N.
Problem
The engineering office wanted a below-ground treatment plant in a concrete tank, as it has already installed numerous concrete tanks below-ground. PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH provided the planners with exact construction drawings in order to build the tank to the correct size and specifications and to install the appropriate pipework.
Solution
Once the engineers received the relevant drawings and began construction of the tank onsite, they regularly informed us about the current status of the concrete work. Meanwhile, we prepared all of the components to install the FBBR biological treatment process in the concrete tank. This included the fixed-bed material, all pipe connections, the aerator plates and the UV disinfection.
The ClearFox® FBBR process is one of the market-leading solutions for domestic wastewater treatment. It consists of a specially configured fixed bed material on which the microorganisms can settle and grow. Through the regular addition of air, the bacteria degrade the contaminants in the wastewater. In the process, a sludge is formed that settles at the bottom of the system. This sludge can be easily separated from the clear water by a lamella clarifier so that it can be discharged into the environment without any concerns.
In this project, we assisted the client with the installation and commissioning of the FBBR treatment plant. During the installation work, a ClearFox® supervisor was on site in Trinidad and Tobago to coordinate all work. The treatment plant has been operating reliably since April 2023, allowing the treated wastewater to be discharged into the environment.
