Discussion
Situation
In a municipality in southern Germany, the existing wastewater treatment plant with a disc submerged basin could no longer meet the limits for direct discharge. It was therefore decided to renovate the plant. To ensure wastewater treatment during the renovation, the municipality looked for an interim solution. To this end, it commissioned an engineering firm, which contacted PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH.
Problem
The municipality’s challenge was to find a temporary solution to bridge the construction phase of the actual wastewater treatment plant. On the one hand, the construction time and costs of the interim sewage treatment plant had to be kept within limits, and on the other hand, it had to be able to comply with the required discharge values. These require a COD of 90 mg/l and a BOD5 of 20 mg/l. The construction of new wastewater treatment plants or temporary discharges to nearby plants are both time-consuming and cost-intensive.
Solution
Containerised wastewater treatment plants are an ideal solution. These are suitable both as a strengthening upgrade and as a complete replacement for existing wastewater treatment plants.
PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH specialises in containerised wastewater treatment plants. It has already equipped numerous municipalities with customised wastewater treatment solutions. For this project, PPU offered two containers with a submerged fixed bed. The process is known for its high purification performance, which remains stable even when overloaded or underloaded. This is a decisive advantage, especially during periods of rain or drought.
PPU supplied two containers for a period of 6 months. These included the ClearFox® FBR process for biological treatment and the ClearFox® lamella clarifier for sludge treatment.
The leasing offer also included a purchase option after six months. As the municipality was very satisfied with the cleaning performance of the containerised wastewater treatment plant, it took over the plant completely and replaced the rotating immersion tank.
