Discussion

Situation

An engineering office for environmental technology from Israel approached the PPU as it was in contact with the Israeli Ministry of Defence. A military camp produces around 15 cubic metres of sewage every day. This is generated by soldiers who occupy the camp in three shifts.

The engineering office had specific ideas about the wastewater treatment plant in order to ensure the best possible operation. On the one hand, there should be no moving parts in the wastewater. On the other hand, the installation and operation should be as simple as possible.

Problem

The challenge with this project was to design the system so robustly that little or no maintenance work was required. The customer is not in a position to regularly maintain or service the system. The PPU therefore set itself the goal of making the system particularly robust. It also planned remote access so that the system could be accessed promptly.

Solution

The best solution for this project was a wastewater buffer and a ClearFox® fixed-bed biological reactor with a connected lamella clarifier. The wastewater in the military camp is usually intermittent. However, as the fixed-bed reactor should be fed as evenly as possible, the wastewater first flows into a buffer to equalise the inflow peaks.

The system then feeds the wastewater evenly into the fixed-bed reactor. Like the lamella clarifier, this is installed in a rotationally moulded plastic tank. Its design makes it particularly stable and durable. This is where the actual biological wastewater treatment takes place. Microorganisms settle on the fixed bed material, which respire the pollutants in the wastewater. They then form activated sludge, which settles to the bottom of the tank.

A ClearFox® lamella clarifier is suitable for efficiently separating the sludge from the clear water. Physical sedimentation is used to form a clear water zone in the upper part, which flows out of the system via an overflow.

PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH installed the complete treatment system in a 20-foot ISO sea container. This was particularly easy to transport. Moreover, no construction work was necessary on site. Thanks to the plug & play concept, the system is ready for connection – the biology achieves initial treatment results after just a few days.
